About a Science of Sciences

About the Project

The purpose of the Academic Subject Classification Project (ASCP) is to collaborate with subject matter experts in academic subjects on the topic of how human knowledge is ideally organized.

  1. Starting Point: The knowledge system developed by Paul Tillich in The System of Sciences According to Objects and Methods Tillich & Wiebe (1981) is presented as a starting point for discussion. The next section provides an overview of the publication history of this title.
  2. Meaning and Value of the System of Sciences: Tillich discusses the significance of the “System of Sciences (SOS),” in the General Foundations section of the text. Key points are discussed in the following section, “Purpose and Meaning of the System of Sciences.”
  3. Contributions by Subject Matter Experts: Short articles by subject experts will be featured to discuss topics related to the position of their subject area in relation to an overall system of sciences.
